Ellington, and its close neighbour Linton, are two small adjoining villages close to the coast of Northumberland, both with a strong past association to coal mining. The Parish has a population of 2,778 (data from the 2011 Census). It is made up of mostly private housing, has two primary schools, village shops, a caravan park and a couple of pubs. The Parish is situated roughly 4 miles north of Ashington, and collaborates on community projects with the neighbouring villages of Cresswell and Lynemouth.
